THE CONVERGENCE OF AUDIO 2003

A detailed study of the Audio Chip Market

Report No: 3020

Table of contents Press Release Price

Forward Concepts, the premier market research firm tracking markets driven by digital signal processing (DSP) technology, is pleased to present our third study of the audio chip market. We believe that this is the most extensive report available on the market for chips dedicated to audio functionality.

There is a clear convergence of personal computer, consumer, and professional audio markets. Historically, these were three separate and distinct markets. Chip companies targeting the PC space were not usually found in the consumer space and visa versa. The needs of the professional audio market were also different from the other two and there were often dedicated groups within large corporations for each segment, each trying to address the specific needs of their respective market segments. Today, there is a clear convergence of these three markets and the technologies that address them, and this report examines the market dynamics that affect the semiconductor industry.

Internet audio, driven by devices like Apple’s iPOD and combo MP3/CD players, still get most of the headlines today, and this new edition provides coverage of that market including all its sub-segments as well as much bigger markets, like those for A/V Receivers and DVD Players. The DVD market is also analyzed in detail including all the convergent combination products like DVD Receivers, DVD Recorders and DVD PVRs.

Understanding the dynamics of the audio market and the chips that enable it is vital for future planning, even for combination audio/video products like DVD and set-top box decoders. These combination A/V products are discussed from the audio standpoint and the dollar value of audio silicon contribution is assessed and projected…a technique that is increasingly necessary in new system-on-chip (SOC) integrated circuits.

This study covers the analog and mixed-signal chips including audio data converters and stereo codecs along with specialty audio chips and both programmable and embedded DSPs.
