Hot Embedded DSP Market Almost Twice The General-Purpose DSP Market According To New Forward Concepts Study

Tempe, AZ – January 13, 2004 – The market for general-purpose digital signal processor (DSP) chips reached the $6 billion market in 2003, up a healthy 24% over the previous year. According to a new market study from Forward Concepts, that market will grow an even healthier 25% in 2004. But the study concludes that an even bigger market for the technology is in the $10.4 billion embedded DSP market that will have an equally healthy growth in 2004. The new in-depth, 325-page study, entitled “DSP Strategies: The Embedded Chip Imperative,” is believed to be the most comprehensive study available of markets driven by DSP technology.

2002: “Steady as She Goes

Tempe, Ariz.- October 13, 2002-

The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) just released chip shipment numbers through August, and we present highlights of the programmable DSP trends in this bulletin.

The good news is that DSP shipments (in revenue) were up 21% over July shipments. But, better news is that August shipments were up almost 36% above the same month a year ago, which was the only down year ever experienced in DSP chip shipments.

DSPs Eke Out Scant Growth

Tempe, Ariz.- August 12, 2002-

Clearly, the telecom market is still in the dumpster, with virtually zero chance of recovery this year. With telecom titans falling all around us, there is a much smaller population of healthy operators to buy equipment. And that has had a dramatic effect on the digital signal processing market. Will Strauss details the mid-2002 market prospects for programmable DSP chips in the July 29th issue of Electronic Engineering Times. Click here for the full article:

The first quarter upturn in the semiconductor market has proved to be a bubble.

Tempe, Ariz.- July 28, 2002-

2002: Proving to be a year of low growth

The first quarter upturn in the semiconductor market has proved to be a bubble. DSP shipments, though, have not experienced an upturn but are running almost even with last year. Consequently, Forward Concepts has lowered its earlier 15% DSP market growth forecast to the 5% level. At least we can say that’s better than the 31% downturn of last year.

DSP MARKET BULLETIN

Tempe, Ariz.-March 21, 2002-

As you must know by now, the semiconductor market experienced its worst sump in history last year, with a decline of 33% in monolithic integrated circuit chips.  And DSP was no exception, with negative growth for the first time in history.  DSP chip shipments reported by semiconductor manufacturers to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization totaled $4,256 million in 2001, representing a drop of 30.7% from year 2000 shipments.

DSP Market Bulletin

Tempe, Ariz.-October 20, 2001-

In the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, it is now evident that the U.S. economy is headed for a recession. In looking over the semiconductor market overall, we have lowered our projections for the monolithic integrated circuit portion of that market from a 25% decline to a 30% drop for 2001.

DSP Market Bulletin

Tempe, Ariz.-September 27, 2001- There is clear softening in the global economy for the first half of 2001 and dramatic chip inventory adjustments have severely impacted Q1 and Q2 chip shipments, as OEMs use up the chips that they over-ordered last year.  For the first time in the 21-year history of the single-chip DSP market, market growth will be negative in 2001.  After Nokia's recent profit warnings and Nortel's 10,000-person layoff, along with the Fed's most recent pre-emptive discount rate cut, we have had to reassess our earlier forecast.

DSP Market Bulletin

Tempe, Arizona, USA 3/2/01: Worldwide programmable DSP chip shipments for the year 2000 came in at just over $6.1 billion according to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization. That represents a 40% growth over 1999 revenues of $4.4 billion. The entire monolithic integrated circuit industry was up by some 35%, so it appears that as DSP deployment becomes more widespread, the growth delta between the all ICs and DSPs becomes narrower. However, DSP shipments in 2000 passed those of the 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) market, the largest MCU market. And we predict that DSP shipments will eventually pass all of the MCU markets, collectively. But, as a high tide raises all ships, a low tide lowers all ships, too.

FORWARD CONCEPTS' DSP MARKET BULLETIN

Tempe, Arizona, USA 4/7/00: DSP February chip shipments, recently announced by WSTS (World Semiconductor Trade Statistics) jumped 56.9% over February of the previous year to the $460 million level. This was an 18.5% monthly growth over the January 2000 DSP shipments. February's growth was 3.5 times the growth of February 1999 over February 1998, portending a very healthy year for DSPs. February was not a fluke, since January's 34.5% growth over January of 1999 was 2 times the growth of January 1999 over January 1998.

Fast-growing MP3 Player Market Chaotic as Industry Struggles over Copyright issues According to New Report

Tempe, AZ April 10, 2000:Forward Concepts has announced the publication of its newest market research report that covers the MP3 Internet Audio market, detailing the market dynamics and both software and hardware trends.

Entitled "Internet Audio-Beyond MP3," the report concludes that chaos best describes the current state of the Internet download audio market. As a new hot market, it has staggering growth potential, but the market is presently fraught with problems, as new audio compression formats have been introduced to compete with MP3 and security issues are in a state of flux. Semiconductor companies, consumer electronics manufacturers, as well as flash memory manufacturers have quickly scrambled to introduce new and improved portable players that strive to keep up with the changing market dynamics in hopes of gaining market share. As a sizeable market for external music storage, flash cards of several formats from several manufacturers are struggling for dominance.

Booming Automotive Market Offering New Semiconductor Opportunities

Tempe AZ, January 10, 2000: Forward Concepts has announced a new market research report, "Automotive Chips 2000," which covers the worldwide automotive market for integrated circuits and other semiconductors through 2005. The report points out that the basic design of automobiles is about to change in dramatic ways. For example, the hydraulic system for brakes will disappear as new electromechanical brakes controlled through a drive-by-wire control system takes its place. The report details how the 12-volt electrical system will give way to a new 42-volt standard, allowing smaller wires to be used at the higher voltage for electromechanical control of those brakes, electrical motors and other actuators in upcoming vehicle designs.

RISC microprocessor market to exceed $3 billion in 2003 says new report from Forward Concepts

Tempe AZ, September 27, 1999 According to the new "RISC2000" market study produced by Micrologic Research and marketed by Forward Concepts, the worldwide market for RISC microprocessor chips will reach $2 billion in 2000 and exceed $3 billion in 2003. That predicted growth follows RISC revenue declines in 1998 and 1999 even though unit shipments continued to grow. It blames the earlier revenue decline on lower prices caused by improved semiconductor technologies, increasing use of system-on-a-chip solutions in place of discrete microprocessors, and by the weak markets in several parts of the world, mostly Asia.
